Elementary Science Program

Jim Filizzi & The Engineering Society of York Elementary Science ProgramThe Engineering Society of York is proud to sponsor the  Elementary School Science Program. The program is an interactive science program that is free to the elementary schools. The purpose of the program is to enliven an interest in the study of science and encourage scientific thinking skills. The program is being conducted by James Filizzi, a retired science teacher of 35 years of teaching experience at Dallastown Area High School. The program presents physical science concepts in a grade appropriate manner for 30 to 40 minutes and is presented in a single classroom setting or a multi-room setting with several classes.

Monies for the Elementary Science Program come from the Edgar P. Kable Trust Fund. The Kable Trust Fund was originally funded by a former President of the York Water Company, Edgar P. Kable. The trust fund was supplemented with a substantial gift from John Kable (Edgar’s nephew) in 2000.

The program is currently for third, fourth, and fifth grade students and is free to York County Elementary Schools. The ESOY Elementary Science Program has touched the lives of over 30,000 students in its first ten years of operation. Michael Buleza, of Stewartstown Elementary School writes:

Dear [Engineering Society Board of Directors],

I am writing on behalf of the teachers and students of Stewartstown, Fawn Area and Delta Elementary Schools to thank the Engineering Society of York for sponsoring the Elementary Science programs, offered to over 500 third and fourth graders in our district.

I am the elementary gifted support teacher who has helped coordinate Mr. Filizzi’s visits to our three schools. I can testify that the students have thoroughly enjoyed the educational programs. Mr. Filizzi has offered over the past years and they look forward to his return every year.

As you may know, funding for assemblies in our schools is very limited and this program provides our students with a dynamic and captivating enrichment program they would not have in any other way.

Mr. Filizzi has been extremely cooperative in scheduling programs .at our schools. I had an opportunity tojoin the students for part of his program on electricity and was very pleased with both the content of the program and our students’ involvement in the presentation.

At a time when our students’ understanding of science and technology is more critical than ever if we are to continue to be a leading nation in these areas, the service your organization provides in these educational programs is more vital than ever.
